BPG = half the size of JPEG

BPG

BPG is brand new image format developed by French programmer Fabrice Bellar.

PROS:
BPG (Better Portable Graphics) produces compelling quality improvement over JPG when images are heavily compressed. Its images demonstrate a lot less color banding and aliasing along the edges, plus unlike JPEG – BPG can handle transparency.

CONS:
Currently, BPG files require a 55 kilobyte Javascript decoder to be embedded in a website before they can be displayed. Since BPG is based on HEVC video compression technology patented by MPEG LA, its owners could charge royalties = making it a risky for popular web browsers to support the format.
